Front squats vs. back squats
Hi all! I’m looking for insight in the pros and cons of doing front squats over back squats.
For context, I did CrossFit on and off for about 6 years. I got really into it between 2018 and 2019 but even at my leanest, I never felt comfortable with back squats. No matter the weight, I always feel like the bar on my back is never right, I always feel unstable, it always feel too heavy even if it’s empty, and I just don’t feel at home doing them. I don’t know if it’s poor hip mobility or what, but they just don’t click.
About two years ago, I was at CrossFit and we had don’t back squats as the main lift that day and then the main WOD (workout of the day) included wall balls. My coach pointed out that I looked so much more stable doing wall balls, which mimic the front squats movement, and that I could opt to do front squats on back squats days if I wanted to. This was close to me moving cities so I never took her up on that.
I’ve now been training in a regular gym and have been thinking of adding squats to my routine. I’ve been avoiding them because of all of the things I just mentioned and have been consistently using the leg press and leg extension machines along with goblet squats and Bulgarian split squats.
But I’m curious what the pros and cons would be to just not bothering with back squats and sticking solely to front squats. I like that squat s also engage your core heavily so I want to do them again, although to be honest, I’m not a fan of them. Anyway, would really appreciate any insight into this from people who know more than me. Thank you!
