Suggestion for my first bike?

I'm looking for some advice on my first motorcycle, as I hope to get my license soon.

My main use case will be driving for fun on all kinds of roads. But I will also be using it for commuting to work, which is about an hour each way and mostly highway riding, including regular traffic jams and slow-moving traffic.

I'm also over 1.80m tall (around 6 feet), so a taller and more comfortable bike is definitely a plus.

At the moment I'm mostly looking at bikes similar to the Suzuki V-Strom 800 and the BMW F800GS/F850GS. I don't really need serious off-road capability, but I do like the upright adventure-bike ergonomics and would still prefer something that feels at least somewhat sporty and engaging to ride rather than purely utilitarian.

For those with experience: how do the V-Strom 800 and the BMW 800/850 GS compare in terms of long-distance comfort and reliability? Is one generally considered the better option for all round use?

And of course, if there are other bikes in the same category that I should consider, I'd love to hear your suggestions.
