I’m emotionally attached to someone I’ve never even seen. Am I wasting my time?
I met this guy online a while ago, and we’ve been talking almost every day since then. He constantly tells me he loves me, says he’s never felt this way about anyone before, and sends long emotional messages. Sometimes, if I don’t reply, he’ll text again saying he’s crying or that he misses me. He tells me things like, “If I ever meet you, there will be no going back.”
The problem is… I’ve never actually seen his face.
He refuses to do a face-to-face video call or send clear pictures because he says he has a girlfriend and doesn’t want to be recognized. He says that’s the only reason he’s hiding himself. I’ve tried explaining that I don’t need anything fancy—I just want to know the person I’m emotionally investing in is real. But every time I ask, it turns into an argument.
Now I’m in this weird situation where I don’t even feel comfortable talking to or dating anyone else. Even though we’ve never officially dated, it feels like we’re emotionally involved. If I went on a date with someone else, I’d feel guilty, like I was cheating on him. At the same time, I don’t even know if I should be waiting for someone who won’t even show me his face.
He says he’s coming to meet me about a week after my birthday this month, but I honestly don’t know if that’s actually going to happen. After our last argument, we still message each other, but not as much as before.
Part of me thinks I should walk away because this whole situation feels unhealthy. Another part of me keeps hoping he’s telling the truth and that we’ll finally meet.
Has anyone else been emotionally attached to someone they’ve never met? Would you keep waiting, or is this a huge red flag that I’m choosing to ignore?
What I know, he never had a connection a guy before
