Is it weird to spend your own money helping stray animals?

I sometimes buy food or pay for basic care for stray cats and dogs. A few people have told me it's a waste of money and that it's "not my responsibility."

I see it differently. If I can make an animal's day a little easier without hurting my own finances, why wouldn't I?

Where do you stand on this? Is helping stray animals a personal choice, or do you think people should focus on other causes instead?
