Daily Yōkai Encounter #31: Shōjō / 猩々

Yōkai of the Day

Today’s yōkai is the shōjō, a sea spirit known for its long red hair, love of sake, and beautiful singing.

Shōjō are said to live along Japan’s rocky coasts. They are often described as intelligent, ape-like beings with bright red hair. Unlike many yōkai, they are not always hostile. Some stories portray them as joyful singers and dancers who enjoy drinking sake.

That does not mean they would not still be unsettling to meet.

Imagine hearing someone singing far out over the water at night. You follow the sound and find a red-haired figure dancing on the shore, holding a sake cup and smiling like they were waiting for you.

Would you sit down and drink with a shōjō, or would you leave immediately?

Have you ever heard music, singing, or laughter in Japan and could not figure out where it was coming from? Have you seen something yourself, had an encounter, or experienced something you could not explain?
