30F Chartered Accountant leaving Big 4 after burnout. Looking for perspective?
I’m a 30-year-old Chartered Accountant in India and have spent around 8 years in a Big 4 audit role.
The experience has been great professionally, but the workload and work-life balance have taken a toll on me. Long hours, weekend work, and constant deadlines eventually led me to resign.
I’m financially comfortable enough to take a six-month sabbatical, and I’m currently traveling. My goal during the break is to focus on my health, fitness, hobbies, learning, and figuring out what I actually want from my career.
I’ve realized that I no longer want to optimize purely for salary. I’d rather have a role with good work-life balance, interesting work, and enough income to live comfortably.
I’m also seriously considering moving abroad in the future because quality of life, infrastructure, and work-life balance matter a lot to me.
For people who’ve left Big 4:
What did you move into?
Do you regret leaving?
If you could do it again at 30, what would you choose?
Is a six-month sabbatical viewed negatively by employers?
If your priorities shifted from salary to quality of life, what paths would you explore?
