30F ending a 7 year relationship because my boyfriend still can’t decide if he wants to marry me. Am I doing the right thing?
I’m 30F and my boyfriend is 30M. We’ve been together for almost 7 years.
Throughout our relationship, he’s repeatedly told me that he loves me deeply but isn’t sure whether he wants to marry me. It’s not that he wants to date other people or that we have major compatibility issues. His struggle seems to be that he can never reach certainty.
This has happened for years. Every time I try to walk away, he comes back saying he loves me and doesn’t want to lose me. Then, after some time, we’re back in the same place where he says he still doesn’t know.
Recently, he admitted that he still can’t make a decision. That’s when I finally told him that I can’t keep living in limbo and that if he couldn’t decide after all these years, I would make the decision for both of us. I sent him a final message and have gone no contact.
The difficult part is that I genuinely believe he loves me. I don’t think he’s manipulating me or keeping me around intentionally. I think he’s genuinely stuck in indecision. But after nearly seven years, his indecision has become its own answer.
I still love him and miss him, but I also know that living with this uncertainty has made me anxious for years.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is there anything someone like this can realistically do to become certain, or is it usually better to accept that some people never reach that clarity?
