I’m currently struggling… what exactly is the “gift” of singleness?

I’ve heard the phrase “gift of singleness” thrown around in Christian circles. When it comes up, often Paul is mentioned with the passage about he wished more people would be as he is- unmarried.

And… usually, the discussion ends there. As from there, the discussion then becomes about a “waiting period” where if you’re faithful enough, if you pray enough, if you do xyz, God will give you a spouse. I’ve even heard people say things like “God will give you your heart’s desire” and “God wouldn’t make you long for love/marriage unless he’ll give it to you.” Which… I’m suspicious of, not going to lie. What passage of the Bible does this come from?

But in any case, I’m aroace. Meaning, it’s very rare that I get crushes or feel attraction to others. And besides that, I’ve always felt deep down that I’m one of the few people that will never get married. Not that I don’t want to, as I would love to fall in love… but my chances are extremely low. I would consider it a miracle and would praise God if I find some sort of love… but I’m not counting on it.

But that brings me to my question: what exactly is the gift of singleness? I’ve heard the term thrown around, but really… what is it when not a waiting period for a “better” life of marriage? Can it be as fulfilling as marriage? Can it lead to good things that a married person can’t experience? Can I still be loved and supported (even if it’s not romantic and sexual love)? Or has God called me into a life of lesser, where I am only missing out on things I can never experience and it just ends there?
