How would you read this situation? (22M living at home)?

I’m 22, working full time, and still living at home while I save for a mortgage deposit. Over the past few days things have gotten really tense with my mam and I’m struggling to figure out if I’m in the wrong here, especially because this has never been an issue before.

Up until now she’s always been genuinely happy that I have a social life. She’s regularly given out about my cousins staying in their rooms all the time and said how great it is that I have a girlfriend and loads of friends. So this is a real change, not a long running complaint.

I’m 22 years old. I’m working full time, I have a girlfriend, I have my own friends, and I just want to live my life the way anyone my age would. When I am actually at home, we barely talk anyway, so I don’t understand where the idea comes from that spending time out somehow means I’m neglecting things at home. Whenever she does make plans or ask me to be somewhere, I go. I’ve never turned her down or blown her off for something else.

It seems to have started after I went away for a long weekend with my girlfriend. She was genuinely enthusiastic about the trip beforehand, telling me how fabulous it was going to be. No specific time was ever given for when I needed to be back, there was no “be home by X,” and I ended up back a few hours later than expected after stopping at my girlfriend’s on the way. I was texting her happily throughout, in good form, not distant or off with her at all.

The day after I got back, she was stomping around the house in a mood, ignoring me, and giving out to me over minor things, like claiming I’d parked my car on the road instead of in the driveway, which I never actually do. Later that day I wanted to go see my friends and my girlfriend to watch Portugal vs Spain. When I went to say bye, she ignored me. When I asked what was wrong, she gave out that I’m never here, then flipped it to saying I look exhausted and can’t keep functioning, going on about how unhealthy it is how much I see my girlfriend. I should say I barely drink at all, I’m on anxiety medication and she knows that, so it’s not like this is coming from nights out drinking. I got very upset, and she ended up screaming at me to get out and just go. It was honestly horrible.

It continued the next day. She ignored me again, then started nit picking about how my masters is going, and threw my clothes at me telling me to hang them up. I couldn’t take the tension and was getting anxious, so I told her I was staying at a friend’s for the night. She called me back into another room and just said “why.” I told her I was feeling anxious and didn’t like the tension. She responded by saying she was only treating me the way I’d treated her the day before on the couch.

None of this was communicated to me beforehand. There was no conversation about expectations, no heads up that timing mattered, nothing. It’s just appeared out of nowhere and escalated fast, and the contradictory complaints make it feel impossible to actually fix anything, because whatever I do seems to become the new problem.

Is this bad, or am I overreacting? Genuinely trying to figure out if I’m missing something here.
