Many things draw people to the ocean. The soothing push and pull of waves, salty fresh air, warm sand between your toes. For August, it was more than that. At the beach, he felt at home. He could spend hours hopping around tidepools, scooping up new creatures, wading in the water, and building sandcastles. For as long as he could remember, it just felt right to be there. Even if he wasn't doing anything, sitting in peace was enough.

Oak Ridge had been home now for many years. An idyllic place with boardwalks, old victorian homes, and a close-knit community. August lived in a small studio apartment. It was pretty close by the beach and within walking distance from work. Those were the only two things he really needed in a place. Living on his own was a big adjustment. At 23 years old, he was all by himself for the first time. Most kids went to college or were even finished with that by now, but August just worked retail at an aquarium store. He loved fish and keeping them, getting other people into the hobby and getting to talk about his interests all day long. For him, that was enough, and his parents were more than happy with it. August is atypical, but even without that as a factor he never wanted to go to school. He spends his time at work, at the beach, or taking his dog Minnow out to do things. She is a very helpful service dog, so she pretty much comes everywhere with him anyway.

Work in a small town like Oak Ridge was hard to come by, endless applications, and waiting to hear back from anyone. A local job board had a listing that seemed easy enough. The pay was good and the requirements weren't too crazy.

First aid, clean driving record and access to a car, police record check, preferred experience in social work or personal support but not required, you must also be okay with dogs!

It would be a few shifts a week assisting with daily living like refilling medication, scheduling, and driving the client to appointments. Why not throw in an application? It seemed easy enough to help out some old person a few times a week.

For whatever reason, they got the job. After a lengthy phone interview that was settled.

Except it wasn't an old person, and y/c didn't find that out until the night before their first day. The client in question was the same age as them.

'August is very independent 23 year old. He cooks and organizes very well. However, he can sometimes be forgetful about refilling medications with the pharmacy, keeping track of scheduling, and staying on top of laundry and shopping. He also can't drive due to having epilepsy, so he will need to be driven to scheduled appointments that are not accessible by bus or walking. We want him to be independent from us but still able to have the help he needs with basic things. Hopefully, he can eventually get better at doing some of these things on his own. He is on the Autism spectrum and can sometimes be nervous or overwhelmed, but he's usually very good at regulating himself. This will be a casual part-time, approximately 15 hours a week.'

Huh. Maybe that age thing was a typo?

His parents were the ones writing the cheques for this, and this was the message sent before August and Y/C were to actually meet. They were scheduled for an hour only to come see the apartment , meet August, and see if they would fit well together.

August was open to the idea and on board with his parents, setting this all up for him. As much as he wanted to be completely independent, that wasn't extremely realistic. Besides, the way his parents had framed it this would only be temporary. Get him on his feet and used to being on his own. Well, maybe not entirely on his own, but at least not depending directly on his parents for everything.

The day finally came, a gentle knock on his front door. Holding his breath, the ginger slowly opened up, hinges creaking as he did. Standing there in the entryway, he glanced over the new face, his lips curled upward in a bright, happy smile. Lighting up his freckled face.

(Hey all, thank you for reading all the way! This is intended to be a romance plot. It will be angsty, sweet and some drama, but mostly fluff.Slowburn transition from the professional support worker relationship to something real outside of that. This is just an idea starter to get us going, but if you have other ideas for how to start, I'm open! I love working together on a plot, so feel free to chat with me ooc about our plans and characters. I am a literate roleplayer going up to the see all limit on disc and oftentimes more than one message per reply. I ask for a similar level of detail and grammar, but I'm not picky with having a consistent line count. If you have a faceclaim for your character, it needs to be realistic only. I think that's all from me, but I will chat with you more if you're interested! Happy roleplays, everyone.))
