Let me set the scene. 79th minute. Egypt 2-0 up. Messi had already missed a penalty. The crowd was starting to whisper about the greatest upset of the tournament. Argentina fans were going quiet. For a moment it genuinely felt like this was how it ended for Messi at his last World Cup.

Then the next 13 minutes happened.

Romero headed home from a corner — 2-1. Messi picked up the ball 25 yards out, looked up and curled it into the bottom corner with his left foot — 2-2. And then in the 90th minute plus 2, Enzo Fernandez got his head to a cross and sent Argentina into the quarterfinals.

Three goals in thirteen minutes. After missing a penalty. After being 2-0 down. In a World Cup knockout game.

The Messi penalty miss is worth talking about because it happened in the first half when the score was already 1-0 to Egypt and Argentina desperately needed a goal. He sent it straight at the keeper. In any other player's career that moment defines the match. For Messi it was just a footnote in a comeback that nobody will forget.

21 World Cup goals now across his career. 8 goals in this tournament alone at 38 years old. After the final whistle he broke down completely on the pitch. His teammates had to help him up. He was inconsolable and the entire world cried with him.

Egypt were brilliant by the way and deserve enormous credit. They defended heroically for 79 minutes and came within eleven minutes of one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. Their goalkeeper was outstanding all night.

But this is Messi's tournament. It feels like it has always been Messi's tournament. And somehow at 38 years old he keeps finding ways to remind you why.

Argentina were 2-0 down with 11 minutes left and Messi somehow dragged them to the quarterfinals and I don't know how to explain this man anymore
