Why are so many (conservative American) Christians on Reddit so toxic, hostile, and utterly lacking in basic humanity?

Yes, I'm talking about the sub AskChristians and Chrisitanity and so on.

I asked a completely normal, curious question (about how movies portray Christianity) and wanted to know the theological perspective on it. Instead of a normal discussion, I was met with extreme hostility, condescending lectures, political rants about Donald Trump, and wild conspiracy theories about Hollywood elites.

It didn't feel like a community of faith; it felt like an aggressive cult. It got me thinking about the state of (mostly) American conservative Christianity, and I want to ask you guys: What is wrong with them?

How can people who claim to follow a God of love act so incredibly mean, defensive, and arrogant?

They have access to all the information in the world, yet they choose to live in a paranoid "us vs. them" bubble where any simple question is treated as a personal attack. Even worse, so much of white conservative Christianity in the US seems tied to nationalism and racism, completely stripping away the humanity, grace, and even the humor of the Bible (even though God and Jesus clearly used irony and humor).

Why has faith for them turned into a toxic political identity weapon instead of practicing basic human decency? Have any of you experienced this same toxic gatekeeping, and how do you view this phenomenon from a healthier Christian perspective?

Perhaps it's a geographical problem, I'm from Europe (NL). Maybe it's that? But here I'm used to being able to talk about things openly and freely, but so many of these people (especially Americans) get defensive if I ask questions (also in private life). Like, it’s just a question, not an attack. Chill.

Thanks for reading, I'm really looking forward to some actual, human responses.
