Hypomania or Excitement - How Do You Tell the Difference?

How can you tell the difference between excitement or happiness and hypomania? My therapist has expressed doubt for my bipolar 2 diagnosis and instead believes that I am experiencing intense emotional highs and lows because of autism, ADHD, and external factors. When I told her I was sleeping 3-5 hours per night and feeling extra energized the next day, she told me that could be because I was excited about something and brought up that her 6-year-old daughter would not sleep in the days leading up to Christmas. This was around Christmastime, so she said I might be excited about the holiday, too. I told her about how I would go through about six-days episodes of impulsive spending, racing thoughts, running around my neighborhood at 4 am feeling euphoric, and not being as afraid to talk or socialize, and she said it doesn’t sound like a true bipolar episode. Now I’m wondering again because I’ve slept 3 hours the past two nights and spent $1,000 yesterday on stuff I didn’t need at all and definitely couldn’t afford. I’ve got the urge to drive across the country or do anything to get the excess energy out. What do you guys do to tell the difference between a hypomanic episode and an emotional high?
