The Disc is dead. But there is the possibility that it could be alright.

Discussion

I know we're all upset about Sony's decision but even though I also signed the petition I think there's not much we can do about it - the PS6 won't have physical games if even a harddrive. I think internally this decision was made a long time ago. Nevertheless I have to say that I also want my discs back but now I try to think beyond that.

Here I want to sketch three points, that would need to be the case for this transition to be alright:

DISCLAIMER: Those ideas are spontaneous and I'm not an expert in any of those topics!

1. Change of the ownership rights

This point is pretty self-explainatory. We should own what we buy and it shouldn't be a possibility for Sony to take it away. Nevertheless it's easier said than done.

2. A new PlayStation Store

The PlayStation Store could be thought of in a new way. There could be THE PS Store, which is available across multible generations of consoles. Every console (for example: PS5, PS6, PS7) share the same store, where the games itself can be locked to one or multiple gens.

This would secure that someone who wants to buy a game for a 20 or even 30 year old console is still able to do so.

Why the need for one unified store? I believe that it would make it easier to maintain the store for many years to come. It could be a sort of steam-lite system that keeps future old games available even for the then older consoles. It's the alternative to the current system of PS stores that have to be maintained by a small team bc it's locked on one console. Those always become worse and die eventually over time as you can see with the PS3 Store.

3. A new pricing policy

I know that this point is only logical in the comsumer/user POV but it should be demanded by the community.

With Sony as the monopoly in pricing it should adapt to that new role. Here I only name three possible ideas:

- PS+ should be much cheaper: If you sell every copy of a game at full price, then the multiplayer should be cheaper or even free.

- There should be regular sales: Like on Steam there should be big sales on a regular basis. This would make it possible for everyone to enjoy the games they want without selling an organ.

- The games should be cheaper: If you are the monopoly on PS exclusives and there are no resellers and stores which could make them cheaper, then you should adapt the prices or to be precise: make them cheaper!

Of course there are arguments against my ideas but I think this discussion could be the more valuable one than "disc: yes or no"
