OP1 for beginner

General Discussion

Hi folks. I’m an experienced bass player who is self taught. I can play most things by ear and I guess I have some theory without sort of realising it. I have always enjoyed playing with synths and groove boxes. I’d love an OP1 but I wanted to ask - do you think I need to know how to play keys to enjoy it?

I feel like I’d have just as much fun playing beats and trying out sounds but by bit. I may be inspired to check out some chords and experiment over time. But it seems to me that if you have a good ear, you can create loops and grooves quite easily assuming one understands the interface. And I’m good at learning those.

Assume for this question that the price isn’t a problem - I understand that £600 keyboard isn’t necessarily a sensible first purchase but I’m good for it and would rather buy decent and buy once, and have the potential resale if it’s not for me.

So, what do you think? Do I need piano grades or can I just tap out some sounds?

Thanks
