How Personal Should My Cover Letter Be

Resumes/CVs

I'm working on a cover letter to apply to a position as a purchasing specialist with my state's office of insurance commissioner. I live in a very blue state and our government loves diversity stuff (or at least virtue signalling about it). This job would revolve around making sure public resources are being spent accordingly in relation to state healthcare.

I would be super excited to work for them because I'm a chronically ill person who relies on public medical care. I became disabled about 6 years ago and have spent the last 4 years putting myself back together and getting a degree so I can find a job I can do sustainably and get off of benefits. This stuff saved my life, I would love to give back to it.

Would it be appropriate to mention being passionate about the work because of my own experiences, or would I be shooting myself in the foot?
