Looking for local details about growing up in Loughborough for a novel
Hi everyone!
I’m a writer currently working on a novel about acting and queer love. It leans towards psychological literary fiction, and my main character is a Black British man from Loughborough.
I’ve done quite a bit of research because I wanted him to come from a fairly ordinary working-class, close-knit family. Loughborough seemed to fit what I was looking for: a town that’s big enough to have everything you need, but small enough that it feels like everyone somehow knows your mum.
I’d love to hear from people who actually know the town. Local jokes, bits of slang, places people tend to hang out, memorable landmarks, traditions, or just random things.
I’d be especially grateful to hear from anyone who’s part of the Black community in Loughborough, or who knows what growing up there is like from that perspective, as I’d love to make my character’s background feel as authentic as possible.
Thanks in advance! 🥰
