Property management says I have to sign a lease to be removed from it ??
Location: Portland, OR
My property management is sketchy and has terrible reviews and I’m currently seeing why.
My lease ends tomorrow, July 10, per my previous lease renewal. I lived at this property for two years. I gave written notice of my intention to vacate on June 9. I paid rent for the 10 days of July. I have sorted out my security deposit with my three previous roommates.
The problem is that my property management company sent my roommates a lease renewal with my name still on it. I asked them to please take my name off of it since I gave notice and send a new one. They are saying that I need to sign this new lease and then they will send an addendum for my roommates to take me off of the lease. This makes no sense.
From my interactions with these people it seems like if I am removed without signing the renewal, there is a “renewal freeze” for one year on the property. I can’t find much info online on what this is.
The employee has also made comments saying that if I don’t do it this way that the owner can “one day decide not to have roommates anymore.” Which sounds like a threat to my previous roommates. I left on good terms with them and I don’t want them to get evicted because of this but it kind of sounds like they will try if I do it this way.
The whole thing is so sketchy. I was just hoping for some advice on what to do about this.
Thank you!
