Self-care culture is useless for people who've actually been through trauma

Possibly Popular

Hot baths, gratitude journals, just take a walk in nature - all of it assumes your nervous system isn't stuck in permanent survival mode. When you've spent years in a relationship where you were gaslit, controlled, and systematically broken down, none of that fluffy advice does a damn thing. It's like offering a Band-Aid to someone with internal bleeding.

Real recovery from abuse isn't candles and yoga. It's ugly. It's screaming on the floor of a storage closet at 3 a.m. It's creating an imaginary person in your head because no one else can help you. It's having fantasies of power and control that terrify you. It's rebuilding your sense of self from scratch with no therapist and no money.

The self-care industry sells comfort. Trauma recovery demands excavation. They are not the same thing. But we keep pretending that the same advice works for everyone, and I think that's harmful.

Not judging anyone who finds candles helpful. I'm saying we need to stop acting like that's the solution for people who've crawled out of hell.
