Considering night weaning, worried about how that will impact breastfeeding?
My baby girl is 10.5 months old, my goal is to breastfeed until she’s 2. We cosleep and she’s latched basically all night. She has 6 teeth with 4 more on the way, and as she sleeps her latch gets super shallow and she bites me all night long. Plus she’s waking up every 2 hours still, my mental health is hanging on by a thread… I’m considering night weaning. I would be fine with stopping cosleeping, she’s in her own room on a floor bed already and I just join her when I’m ready for bed since she wakes up so often, but if it helps her get to sleep for longer and I can be in my room with my husband again that would be fantastic!
I’m just confused on how this would affect breastfeeding in general. She’s eating 3 solids meals plus 1-2 snacks and not nursing much during the day anymore. She only nurses a few times during the day, mostly to top-up after a meal, to sleep for her naps (twice), then to sleep for bedtime, and then is latched on aaalll night nursing throughout the night. I know a few women who nursed until the age of 2 and for all of them I’ve seen their toddlers eventually stopped daytime nursing and they would just nurse to sleep and throughout the night, which is the opposite of what I’m trying to do. My questions are:
- Is this appropriate and healthy to do at her age?
- Would I have to stop nursing to sleep, or only cut out MOTN feeding? Currently there’s no way I can put her to sleep without nursing, my husband can get her to sleep though.
- Would she naturally shift her nursing to the day, or could this affect how much milk intake she gets and possibly cause early weaning?
Any help or advice on how to get started on this is very appreciated!
