Starting a project.

I bought a regular brass zippo at the store with the inention of painting it. If it turns out well I'll do another one. My idea is to have a whole billiard ball set. I know I could get painted ones from the site but that kinda kills the fun. Any suggestions on surface prep? There's a decent amount of clear coat on the case from the factory.
