Applying for RAP with pesky FFEL loan
Hello!
Like most of us here, my partner and I are trying to exit SAVE forbearance. For context:
- For 2025, we MFS in a community property state and plan to use gross income from my partner's paystubs, which will be a lower payment than our 50/50 split AGI from our tax returns. Combo AGI is about 100k.
- I have no loans (yay PSLF!).
- Partner has direct loans from 2010-2015 with two small FFEL from early 2010. Unconsolidated and all entered repayment in late 2015. Been on a combo of PAYE/IBR and then SAVE/IBR. All serviced by Advantage. Debt is big, so forgiveness is the goal.
- Partner has not gotten the 90-day SAVE notice yet.
Our goal is to move the direct loans to RAP, but the online application says partner is ineligible because of the FFEL loans, which is untrue. A couple other posts here gave the impression that a paper application with attached income documentation is the way to go, but the PDF hasn't been updated for RAP yet.
I want to make sure these three options make sense, and that I'm not missing anything. We can:
- Wait for the paper application to include RAP and hope the timing lines up with the 90-day notice. Frustrating because we got all our tax stuff ready and want to get back to making progress and not gaining interest for no reason.
- Use the current paper application to get the direct loans back on PAYE until the paper application for RAP is available. Hate this because we waited for July 1 so we wouldn't have to switch twice. We could've switched back to PAYE months ago.
- Pay off the FFEL loans so future recertifications are easier and RAP shows up as an option on the online application. This is our ultimate goal over the next year or so, but doing it right now would drain our emergency fund. Ideally, we could accomplish this before next year's recertification.
We want to avoid:
- Consolidating the FFELs (reset their forgiveness counter and make RAP the only option forever).
- Putting the direct loans on IBR (so much capitalized interest when eventually switching to RAP).
Based on my knowledge, all three of the options listed are viable. It just depends on timing. Either way, I think we should wait a bit before making a move, which is frustrating (a theme for all this, really 🤬).
Smart people of this sub, am I missing anything that would make one of these options not viable and/or better than the others?
