## Local LLMs aren't magic-they're just another dependency

Even if the output isn't perfect, the key is developer ergonomics: fast iterations and fewer compliance headaches.

## The two fears that matter: performance and safety (and both are manageable)

Performance: Local doesn't have to mean "painfully slow." Quantized models (e.g., 4-bit/8-bit variants) are designed for consumer hardware. For many dev-assistant tasks-summarization, code explanation, log parsing-sub-second to a few seconds is totally acceptable, especially when it saves context switching and network round trips.

Practical tip: don't benchmark only "tokens per second." Benchmark end-to-end task time. For example, "explain this stack trace and propose a fix" might take 3-8 seconds locally, but it's still a win if it avoids uploading proprietary logs and waiting on rate limits.

Safety: The realistic risk with local models is not that they "escape" your machine-it's that developers accidentally give them access to things they shouldn't have (filesystem, secrets, production APIs) via overly powerful tool calling.

Mitigations are familiar software practices:

- Principle of least privilege: run the model in a container or restricted user account.
- Tool whitelisting: expose only specific actions (e.g., "read this one log file") instead of "read any file."
- Secret hygiene: never mount `.env` or credential directories into the model runtime.
- Audit logs: log tool calls the model triggers, just like you would for any internal service.

If you can run untrusted open-source services safely, you can run a local LLM safely.

## Where local LLMs shine (and where they don't)

Local LLMs are especially strong for: private codebases, regulated environments, quick internal tools, and "AI features" that must work offline. Consider a customer-support triage app that summarizes tickets. A local model can redact PII, generate internal-only summaries, and classify issues-without sending customer data to a third party.

They're not ideal for: bleeding-edge reasoning tasks, massive context needs, or scenarios requiring consistently top-tier quality. The good news is you don't have to choose. Many teams run a hybrid setup: local LLM first for privacy-sensitive preprocessing (redaction, summarization), and then optionally call a hosted model for the final polish when policy allows.

If you're a developer, the question isn't "Should I fear local LLMs?" It's "Which tasks benefit from locality?" Start small, sandbox it, pin versions, and treat it like any other service in your stack. You'll likely find it's less scary than yet another cloud dependency.
