Reanimation Protocols vs Voice of Command

Discussion

Guard was my first army, I played it all of 8th and loved it. I ended up playing Custodes and Necrons for the past few editions though.

Coming back to guard after all these years is wild. The rules are wack, the points are wack, the sheets are wack.

Lets compare Voice of Command to Reanimation Protocols.

To use VoC, you need:

  • An officer, which costs extra points.
  • An officer that can target the target unit (squadron, regiment, etc)
  • The officer has to be able to give out that specific order (i.e Graves can't issue Take Aim).
  • The target unit needs to be in range of the officer model
  • The target unit cannot be battleshocked

Lets compare it to Reanimation Protocols:

  • The unit can't be dead

No that's it. You can make reanimation protocols better using leaders, strats and wargear, but you don't have to do anything special to use protocols.

Ok ok, necrons are one of the best armies in the game, maybe other armies have more conditional army rules.

Lets look at custodes: Martial Ka'Tah

  • Be in melee

Surely the datasheets are good right? Well...compare Nekrosor Ammentar vs Commissar Graves. 50 point difference between those models.

Graves:

  • If you land a charge, she can deal like 4 mortals on average or something between the cowcatcher and tank shock.
  • Decent chaff clearing melee and some light marine killer power fist attacks.
  • Does not have the commissar keyword
  • 4+ invuln, T8, 12W

If you have a unit disembark near her:

  • and that is a regiment unit (aka not bullgryn, or like only decent melee unit)
  • The unit has to be infantry as it has to disembark from a chimera or Taurox
  • That unit has to fit in a Chimera or Taurox

You can make their melee skill better with an order.

The best target for that order? You don't want to know and I don't want to calculate it, but the options here are fucking dire.

for 50 points more than Graves with Nekrosor Ammentar:

  • Deep Strike
  • Fights First
  • 6A, S10, -3, 3D unmaker gauntlet and AP 1 extra attacks.
  • Lone op when near Destroyer Cults
  • Sustained Hits 1 AURA on melee and ranged so long as you're attacking the closest units, or any target if they have destroyer cults.
  • Reroll Wounds for destroyer cults after Nekky kills someone.
  • FNP aura for all models against mortals and psychics.
  • T8, 4+ invuln, 9W.

I know Necrons are one of the best armies, but god damn. Nekky can just exist near units and provide value. He can go the entire game without attacking someone and provide value, meanwhile in order to use graves you have to do a fucking IQ test. Why do I got to bring transports and disembark the unit at a specific spot near graves so that I can give shock troops +1 bs or some shit?

Whats wrong with just making Voice of Command work like Martial Ka'tah and just decide what order you want to apply to every unit at the start of the fight or shooting phase? Why are our datasheets so expensive for things that are not good lol
