I’m a white person interested in attending a temple, could that lead to any issues?
I’m an American and, about a year and a half ago, I began taking a significant interest in Hinduism after discovering and studying Carnatic music at my university. I have spent some time since then researching the various schools of thought but still want to continue deepening my knowledge of the dharma. I have also really wanted to become friends with more Hindus since there were a lot of them at the university I intended. I’m considering potentially involving myself with a Hindu circle or community, and maybe even become a Hindu myself eventually. That being said though, I know it’s more than likely that I’ll stick out like a sore thumb.
I know that white people can be a bit notorious when it comes to appropriating eastern traditions, such as the complete warping of the definition of yoga in the west. However, part of why I want to befriend people who are deeply involved with the tradition is so that I can learn how to “do things correctly” and therefore treat it with the respect it deserves.
That being said, do you think there’s a chance that I would or would not be accepted if I were to attend a temple? Is there anything I should avoid doing in order to better my chances of being accepted?
I am simply not sure if there’s a stigma regarding whites converting to Hinduism inside of traditionally non-white Hindu circles, so that’s why I ask.
Any and all advice is appreciated as I still consider myself fairly unknowledgeable when it comes to Hinduism.
Thank you so much for your help!
PS, if any of you would like to be friends, please don’t hesitate to reach out :)
