New floor at top of stairs

We ripped up old carpet on our second floor and want to lay new flooring down. We would prefer to put flooring on top of the old floor so that we don’t have as big of a step into the rooms off the hallway (one step would about 2 inches) but that may cause issues with the top stair tread.

Is there an easy solution to this that I don’t know of?
