Am I overreacting to what my mom said?
I (44m) have been married to my husband (40m) for 3 years and we have been together for 10. My mom and I had a disagreement after Mother’s Day because my husband was unable to come out to brunch with us and he didn’t send her a happy Mother’s Day text/acknowledgment. She called me up to ask if my husband would be there for Father’s Day because it wouldn’t be fair for him to show up for my dad and not for her. I said he wouldn’t be available because he had that same commitment as before (he plays softball).
So it got heated and my mom said “you want us all to buy into this gay marriage thing, but you have no sense of what it means to be a family.”
I kind of got my back up. I’m gay; therefore any marriage I would have would be a gay marriage or does she just want me to be alone forever. My husband is more than happy to not have my mom around lately but is also unsure if I’m taking this too far.
My dad just called and he wants me to help my mom out after his knee surgery next week and I said I would love to but I just need an apology so we can move forward. He said that my mother doesn’t think she said anything wrong and it is going to be up to me to mend fences.
What’s my next move?
