How often do you run into people from high school at a big college?

Just curious, how often do you guys run into people from high school when going to a big or average sized college?

For context, I’ll be a freshman this fall. I come from a big high school with about 5,000 students, and a lot of people end up going to nearby in-state colleges (like the one I will be attending). My university has around 40,000 students, and even with a school that size, I’m still worried about running into people from high school and feeling stuck in the same social circles.

I originally wanted to go out of state, but that wasn’t really feasible. I still want college to feel like a fresh start and a chance to meet completely new people.

Did any of you end up seeing people from high school often, or was it easy to branch out and make new friends? Especially if you’re in the same major or a similar one as a lot of people from your high school.
