Barking dogs

This probably is something some of us can relate to.

Our neighborhood has quite a lot of dogs. So if one starts barking, it's for the rest of the evening and sometimes night. It's been going on for several years now. They bark at the most ungodly hours waking us (and our very young kids) up and keeping us awake. Only the owners don't seemed to be bothered by it. I have no problem with a barking dog, but to much is to much.

I don't know if there's some kind of trick or device you guys used to solve this kind of problem? We thought about going to the police and let them step in. But that seems a bit to much. And before you ask or propose, we are past the talking and asking point unfortunately...
