Grass alternatives for zone 8b

Bought a house this year and the previous owner did an absolute shite job in the yard. No lining underneath gravel or mulch so in getting spotty grass everywhere. Not interested in digging up the entire yard and put lining downso thinking of a grass alternative to cover it all over. Can't seem to find reliable options for zone 8b. Any suggestions?
