What If Cricket Could Build Every Sport in India?
One thought that has been on my mind lately:
India is home to one of the richest sporting bodies in the world, yet many of our athletes in other sports continue to struggle with inadequate infrastructure, coaching, and financial support.
Imagine if a small portion of the financial success of cricket could be used to strengthen the entire Indian sporting ecosystem.
I'm not suggesting that the BCCI should run every sport. Every sport has its own technical requirements, ecosystem, and experts. Football should be run by football experts, athletics by athletics experts, and so on.
But what if the BCCI's commercial success could contribute to a transparent National Sports Development Fund?
Such a fund could be used to Build world-class infrastructure for underfunded sports, Hire the best coaches and sports scientists, Provide scholarships and financial security to talented athletes, Create professional domestic leagues across multiple sports, Generate thousands of jobs in coaching, physiotherapy, sports analytics, management, and sports medicine.
Most importantly, it could change the mindset of Indian parents.
Today, many parents encourage cricket because it offers a clear career path. If football, hockey, athletics, swimming, wrestling, gymnastics, and other sports offered similar opportunities, countless talented children would pursue the sport they truly love instead of the one that seems financially secure.
India has never lacked talent. What we've often lacked is a system that nurtures talent across every sport.
Cricket's success doesn't have to remain cricket's success alone. It could become the foundation for building India into a true multi-sport powerhouse.
What do you think? Should a portion of cricket's financial success be used to develop other sports through an independent and transparent mechanism?
