I always though making a cartoon meant weeks of drawing and a whole team, so I wanted to see how far I could get with just one tool. Ended up making a short 3D Lego-style cartoon entirely inside **Google Flow's Storyboard Studio**. The story is basically a Lego office worker (Bixby) stuck in a boring gray office who finds a single red brick and slowly colors the whole place, with a grumpy boss who eventually comes around. Here's how I actually did it, and the stuff that annoyed me, because it's honestly not all perfect.

It starts with the script. I gave it one line, something like "a 3D Lego-style cartoon about an office worker tired of the gray office, happy ending," and it wrote the whole thing out split into scenes. You can obviously polish the script in ChatGPT or Gemini first, but I kept mine dead simple on purpose just to see what it'd do on its own, and it was pretty decent.

Then you hit autofill in the assets tab and it generates your characters, locations and props. This part is simple so literally you do nothing here.

Final step is to generate the scenes. Also quite easy that you just hit autofill, annd goole flow agent make the job itself. Being honest it works quite desent, as at the end of the day the story follows the actual scenario and most of the scenes make sense. If you do not like something you simply can delete, create or recreate the scene.

Those become the pieces you reuse later. The main thing for keeping characters looking the same is that you have to tag the character reference in every shot, otherwise the agent has no clue that "Bixby" is a specific guy and he just morphs. Once you tag him he mostly stays consistent.

And I say mostly on purpose, because this is where it got frustrating. Even after tagging, I still got some inconsistencies once I was actually animating, little details and faces drifting between shots. Fine for a one-off video, but character consistency clearly still needs work if you're picky about it.

The animation is done by an agent, and since it remembers the conversation you can correct it as you go, which is nice. The thing that tripped me up: if you cram multiple actions into a single shot (boss walks in AND grabs the brick AND reacts) it falls apart. Bricks teleporting, wrong outfits, the whole mess. Splitting it into two or three simple shots fixed it every time, and throwing in stuff like "don't move the elements, keep the character consistent" into the prompt helped a lot.

A few things genuinely bugged me though:

* In the storyboard I couldn't find any way to select an existing character. So right now I honestly have no idea how you'd make a proper series with the same characters across episodes. That part feels unsolved and it's the thing I most want figured out.
* Voices: there's a library you can pick from, which is fine, but you can't bring in your own existing voice. A bit limiting if you already have a character voice you like.
* The Gemini watermark is always there on the output. Small thing, but annoying, especially if you want it to look clean.

The other tedious part is that it's all shot by shot, so I ended up building a little free tool that runs in Flow: you upload the storyboard JSON, set a voice per character, pick which shots to render and the length, and it batches the clips for you. Saves a ton of clicking. It's free and you can tweak it.

Overall though? For where this stuff was even six months ago, it's genuinely good, and I got a full little animated story out of it in an afternoon. Just don't expect flawless consistency yet.

Full video with the walkthrough and the finished cartoon is linked. Happy to share the tool too if anyone wants it, just say so.

Now question: Has anyone found a reliable way to reuse the exact same characters across multiple videos in Google Flow? I mean to do so that you can reuse the same charecters for other storyboards?
