How to set players count permanently on single player?

I started playing single player, offline Pd2, standard, not plugy, a few days ago and every time I leave a game and make a new one, it defaults back to "players set to 8" at the top of the screen as soon as I join. I have to type /players 1 every game. How can I set this to another number? Is there a help function such as '.set-players 1' that can change this? I've tried that command and it doesn't do anything. Thanks
