David Lowery is set to direct an adaptation of John Langan's Bram Stoker Award winning novel The Fisherman for Focus Features

He will co write the script with Alex Ross Perry and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes will produce alongside Gary Dauberman's Coin Operated

The story follows two widowers who bond over fishing trips in upstate New York and end up facing a supernatural entity known as Der Fisher

The novel won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel in 2016 so the source material has serious horror pedigree

Lowery is an interesting choice, his visual style is dreamlike and surreal as seen in A Ghost Story and The Green Knight, which could be a perfect fit for the material

But he also directed live action Disney remakes Pete's Dragon and Peter Pan & Wendy, so his track record is all over the place

Michael Bay producing is the wild card here, Platinum Dunes has a history with both horror remakes and original franchises like The Purge and A Quiet Place

So you have an arthouse director who loves slow burn imagery teaming up with a blockbuster horror producer known for commercial hits

That could either be a brilliant collision of styles or a complete mess

The indie crowd will probably love the idea of Lowery tackling horror while genre fans might worry Bay will push for something too mainstream

Either way it is one of the more intriguing horror projects on the horizon and a major collaboration between some of the biggest names in the space

Focus Features is coming off the success of Obsession which grossed over 400 million on a 1 million budget, so they are clearly hungry for more horror gold

The Fisherman could be their next breakout if the creative team can find the right balance between Lowery's artistry and Platinum Dunes' commercial instincts
