you can construe the term liberally - there are the classics, like Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, but there‘s room for amateur sleuths like the Dude or Jessica Fletcher.

I’m partial to the drug addled variety, but more on the Harry DuBois/Doc Sportello end than, say, Sherlock Holmes. Also dig the disarmingly rumpled type - Columbo, George Smiley.

I wish there was a way to be a detective irl that wasn’t morally repugnant but thats what books and movies are for
