AITAH for making a joke after my grandfather died to try to lighten the mood?
My grandfather passed away today, and I'm not really sure how to feel about everything.
For some context, I never got to know him very well mainly because my nana was abusive and controlling toward both him, my mum, and my uncle. Because of that, there was always distance in our family. Over the last few years, he also declined a lot mentally and physically, to the point where he really wasn't himself anymore. As sad as it is to say, part of me feels like death was a release from the condition he had been living in.
When we got the call, my family was all sitting together in my room. It was my mum, my dad, my brother, and I. Everyone was pretty quiet and in shock. No one really knew what to say, and it felt awkward.
I've always used humor to cope with difficult situations. It's not because I don't care—it's almost the opposite. When things get really emotional or uncomfortable, I instinctively try to lighten the mood.
So after we'd been sitting there for a while, I said, "Well... Grandma beat him out," referring to my dad's mum, who has had her fair share of health concerns. I was making a joke that she "won the race," not trying to disrespect my grandfather or make fun of his death.
For a little more context, my dad's parents have always been much more like parents to my mum than her own parents ever were. My mum had a difficult childhood because of her own mum, and she's always felt much closer to my dad's side of the family. Because of that, the joke didn't come from a place of disrespect—it was more about our family dynamic and trying to break the silence.
My family laughed however, I couldn't tell if it was a real laugh or not. No one told me it was inappropriate, and no one seemed offended. But afterward, I started wondering if I crossed a line.
I know everyone grieves differently, and I know the day someone dies is usually not the time people expect jokes. At the same time, humor has always been how my family gets through hard situations.
So, AITA for making that joke, even though it was meant to lighten the mood?
