Why do the characters have multiple names?

Hey!

This is my first time reading Chinese stories. It took me a couple of chapters to learn how everyone seems to have two or three names. Could someone explain why to me?

I'm not knowledgeable about Chinese culture. I did Google this question before hand. The answers I found said there's typically a Mandarin name and a Cantonese name or pronunciation? ??

My best guess after searching is that you can pronounce Chinese names two different ways?

I ask since I have dyslexia and the struggle to grasp the multiple different names is real LOL
