Thoughts as a daughter of someone like Georgie.
I’m sorry for how long this is and if you read it all you’re a star. Also I don’t mean for this to come of as a dump of my past it’s just a conversation about the things I experienced growing up being raised by someone similar to Georgie and how I can see the parallels in family fizz.
I had a parent like Georgie (although it was a stepmother not my bio mom) and she was obsessed with looking fit and healthy and avoiding pretty much everything that would seem harmful, from vaccines to microwaves to sugar to even online banking. She started to impose these rules she had for herself on me when I was around 6 years old. The result? I had bulimia by age 10 and after going into recovery it turned into orthorexia.
I also experienced huge issues with my health growing up as I caught measles due to the fact I was never vaccinated. I also had many other issues going on such as losing my period for years (even now I don’t have a regular cycle), digestive issues etc and until I was old enough to go myself I was never able to get medical help regarding these issues as she did not believe in modern medicine and had a bunch of conspiracies surrounding the pharmaceutical industry.
During Covid her beliefs got worse tenfold. Although we were quite poor and we didn’t become the materialistic way Georgie has, instead quite the opposite and became extremely minimalist to the point I didn’t even have a bed to sleep on. However I see these as two sides of the same coin.
I was very fortunate though that I was able to see a therapist during all these years as I was put in therapy due to the reason I no longer had my bio mom. And after many years my therapist and my sister who had long moved out helped me to understand this was not a normal lifestyle. By around 16 I realised just how terrible it was, all the food I ate was controlled to be the most ‘healthy’ but it was actually a very restrictive diet, I would faint often and only then I was allowed a treat so my blood sugar could increase. I had many issues medically that I was finally able to get help for as 16 is the age you can see a doctor without a parent here.
I only had my GCSEs because they were done during Covid and I studied at home but I never got my a levels as I was essentially taken out of school. And at 17 I finally called social services on my stepmom and was taken into foster care. I am only 21 now and still deconstructing the way I was raised but I see a lot of parallels in this family.
Now I’m not saying it’s the exact same, but my stepmoms belief system didn’t start off terribly, it started the way Georgie’s did and it slowly got worse until I was being starved and restricted of all freedoms over 10 years.
And I know a lot of my thoughts will have a level of projection of my own experiences but I am worried for sienna and karma. Because it will only get worse for them. They are in this isolated bubble and are not living a normal life of peers their age. The pressure into fitness and healthy eating will have an impact on them. And they don’t have an outlet for it the way I did with my therapist and sister. On top of this, it’s being showcased to the world which adds the pressure of appearing as though everything is okay and that they love this lifestyle. We’ve seen such a bright intelligent child who wanted to be a scientist be dulled. We’re seeing the same thing now with karma who wants to be doing activities and dress more tom-boyish be left to do tongue exercises and wear pink dresses. I really wish the best for these children and that they find people outside this bubble they can talk to. And I truly hope Georgie gets help with her issues so that her children can live a more normal life. I haven’t spoken to the woman who raised me (my stepmom) since I was 17. I think it’s more than likely at least one of her children will end up no contact when they grow up and realise how much they missed out on life and how much they’ve been set up to fail in the real world.
