Prospective student with questions about the career
I’m a prospective EMS student. I plan on going to EMT school next summer since summers are the only semesters my CC allows having no flu vaccine.
I’ve been wanting to go into the healthcare/healthcare adjacent field since sophomore year of high school but I’ve been jumping back and forth between majors. Currently a microbiology major and I will be graduating this fall. Out of high school, I applied for EMT school (2020), had a medical exemption approved for the flu vaccine, and they weren’t requiring the COVID vaccine but then changed their protocol a week before class started so I ended up having to drop because my PCP at the time did not have the COVID vaccine at their office should I have a reaction to another viral vaccine (I now have my COVID and boosters so it’s been a non issue since then). When I was looking to reapply this year, they did not offer medical expeditions for the flu vaccine as they did back in 2020 so the summer semester is the only semester I can participate in.
When I was around 4-5y/o I had a flu vaccine that caused me to go to the hospital. My lips swelled up and I had hives over my body. I haven’t had a flu shot since then because of the reaction. I spoke with my PCP about it a few months ago and based on that reaction he didn’t recommend I get my flu vaccination and instead wait for the summer semesters of EMT school.
I’m just curious if anyone has had an allergy to the vaccine like I did and was still able to have a career in this field despite not being vaccinated. Also curious if this career could still be an option for me considering my allergy. I’m sure my miles will vary depending on company/department but this is something I’ve wanted to do for years now. Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thank you.
