Breaking up because of timing?

venting/ranting

My boyfriend (27) and I (25) were together for 2 years and lived together. Last week, after a fight during what he says is the busiest and most stressful season of his job, he broke up with me. He has a history of threatening to break up or move out during big fights, but this was the first time he actually followed through.

Tonight we had our most honest conversation yet.

He told me that over the last 6 months he became increasingly unhappy, largely because he doesn't want to live in New York anymore. He moved here for me and feels like every major decision he made over the last year was for me and out of love, but that he lost himself in the process. He feels like he sacrificed what he wanted and eventually built resentment.

He also said he repeatedly asked me for space months ago so he could focus on work during his busiest season. Looking back, he's right that he asked. I would do well for a few days, but then my anxiety would take over, we'd argue again, and I'd push for reassurance. I told him needing space is different from breaking up, and he said he felt like breaking up was the only thing that actually made me leave him alone.

He says this isn't about another woman. He told me he doesn't want anyone else, still sees a future with me, and hopes things can change. He describes this as needing a "break up" to focus on himself and figure out what he wants because he doesn't know who he is anymore. He even said he wouldn't see another woman while we're living together and would tell me first if that ever changed.

I was also honest with him. I told him that if we ever got back together, I would need him to change how he handles conflict. Throughout our relationship he has threatened to leave during fights, called me names, and hit below the belt with comments that were unnecessarily hurtful. While he has grown in some ways over the last two years, that pattern has never fully gone away, and I don't think I could marry someone if that continued.

So now we're in a strange place. We still love each other. We're living together until our lease ends on October 1. We have an Alaska trip planned in a few weeks that neither of us has decided whether to cancel.

Do I agree with everything he said? Honestly, no. I think there are parts where he's placing too much responsibility on me, and I think he has his own issues with conflict, stress, and avoidance that contributed significantly to where we are. At the same time, I appreciated that he was honest and took ownership of some of his own unhappiness.

Oddly enough, I left the conversation feeling calmer. I don't have certainty, but I have more clarity. I understand his perspective much better, even if I don't fully agree with it.

Now I'm left wondering whether this is a relationship that can be rebuilt. I still love him very much, but this experience has also made me question what I need in a future husband. I guess only time will tell whether this is a major bump in the road or the end of our story.

I'd appreciate advice from people who have been through something similar, especially if you've successfully reconciled after one partner reached a breaking point. Should I go to Alaska? Should I tell him it's not a good idea that we go? The trip is in 3 weeks and I took off 10 days from work for it. I could take my PTO back, but I just feel embarrassed.
