(Spoilers) …I’m frustrated.
This has probably been the most frustrating viewing experience I’ve had with an Evil Dead movie.. Mostly because I thought the movie was nearly perfect up until the last 10 minutes.
I was absolutely LOVING it. The initial car crash scene and possession scene was incredible, one of my favorite in the entire franchise. The shot of Jessica hanging upside down, head held on by a thread, smiling.. chefs kiss.
Then the other car scene with the dad was insane. What a nasty kill. I felt absolutely awful for Thya, she got completely fucking brutalized.
All of the deadites looked great, the cinematography was great. I have heard some people complain about the acting but I thought the acting was great as well. I liked how the director tied French influences into the film.
The movie was just cold, mean, and relentless. Exactly what I wanted.
Then we got to the climax and.. what an insane letdown. A CGI burning skeleton was truly what they decided would be best? Are you serious? They spent the runtime building up to THAT?
It looked awful. He kept repeating the same lines over and over again in an attempt to drill the “meaning” into your head. It completely took me out of the rest of the film.
The post credits scene helped redeem it a bit for me, but ultimately I just walked out of the theater.. sad. Because it felt like a nearly perfect movie with an insanely underwhelming finale that tainted the entire project for me.
Obviously this is just my opinion, but.. Anyone else feel this way? That it was nearly perfect outside of the very end?
