Why does the first thing authors think people would do with brain implants would be to become more intelligent, or use it to gain some advance skill (aka: to be better at work)?

If I had a brain implant like that, I'm 100% tampering my personality to be forever joyful, or fry my brain trying.

I mean, it's the final boss of all drugs: something that for once and for real, you can get and would make you feel happier 100% guarantee.

And even if it doesn't make you Mary Poppins on Coke kind of happy, just a 5% improvement would still make it the most saleable thing in the universe.

I genuinely believe that mental health and wellbeing industry would annihilate any other possible application of such technology if it ever came to be, the way porn and cat videos have annihilated any other possible use of the internet.
