AITA for telling my friend her boyfriend was manipulative, and possibly ruining our friendship?
I (23F) became friends with another woman (19F) a few months ago in the most random way.
One Sunday morning, right before church, she and her boyfriend showed up because their cat had gone missing. They live right next to our church, so they were asking if anyone had seen it. They ended up staying for the service, and afterward I got to know both of them.
From there, our friendship just happened naturally. We clicked almost immediately. We’d hang out multiple times a week, I’d drive her places when she needed a ride, we’d go shopping, grab food, paddleboard, or just spend time talking. It was one of those friendships that felt effortless.
As I got to know her better, I also learned she’d struggled with her mental health for years and takes medication. That never changed how I saw her, I just wanted to be a supportive friend.
The more time I spent around her relationship, though, the more concerned I became.
One day I took her paddleboarding. We got back around 4 p.m. While we were unloading everything, her boyfriend called her yelling because she wasn’t home yet. Then he told her that if she didn’t come home immediately, he’d kill himself.
I was honestly shocked.
For context, I survived an abusive marriage. Emotional manipulation, guilt, control, threats, I know those patterns all too well. So hearing him say that immediately set off alarm bells for me.
I told her that threatening suicide to make your partner come home is manipulative.
She actually agreed with me in that moment.
After that, I stopped really spending time with him. I also told her I wasn’t comfortable having him over at my house. Occasionally, if she told me about something he’d done, I’d comment that I thought it sounded manipulative or toxic.
She never asked me to stop, so I honestly believed she appreciated having someone validate what she’d already acknowledged herself.
Then one day she sent me a long text saying I needed to stop talking about him. She told me he wasn’t manipulative, that I needed to stop judging him, and that it wasn’t my place.
I immediately apologized.
I told her she was right—I had pushed too hard. I said if he makes her happy, then I’ll be happy for her. I promised I wouldn’t make any more comments about him and that I wanted us to start fresh without carrying those negative feelings forward.
She seemed to accept my apology and said she still wanted to be friends.
But ever since then, everything has changed.
She never really has time to hang out anymore. It takes forever to hear back from her. She doesn’t answer my calls. Our friendship feels completely different.
I honestly don’t know if she’s distancing herself because I hurt her feelings, because he’s encouraging her to pull away, or if she’s simply busy.
Today I finally texted her and asked if she wanted me to continue reaching out or if I’d damaged our friendship enough that I should let it go.
The hardest part is that I genuinely care about her.
Even if she decides she doesn’t want to be friends anymore, if one day she realizes she’s in an unhealthy relationship and needs somewhere safe to go, my door will always be open. I won’t say, “I told you so.” I just want her to know she’d have a safe place if she ever needed one.
I know I was wrong to keep making comments after my initial concern. I can own that. My intentions weren’t to control her decisions, I was trying to protect someone I care about because I recognized behaviors I’d experienced myself.
AITA? Did I overstep by continuing to comment on her relationship? Is there anything else I can do to repair the friendship, or is the kindest thing to step back and let her come to me if she ever wants to?
