Hi!

To start off:
\- I’m located in West Virginia
\- we’ve lived here over two years
\- my landlord has been contacted each and every time there has been a leak
\- we have air filters and fans running aimed at the ceiling

We live in the top unit of an old duplex with a flat roof. There is a big attic that I have access to through a little pop out tile in the ceiling. The attic space above our bedroom is completely sealed off from the rest of the attic, and maintenance can’t/won’t get access to it for whatever reason. All the walls and ceilings are plaster.

We’ve had four separate leaks since moving in. The first was from the remnants of Helene that caused a medium stain, a leak that caused a long stain along a seam, another leak earlier this week that caused a lot more splotchy stains, and just last night, the fourth and biggest leak happened.

Dark, foul smelling water started dripping from a long stain along another seam. The bedroom smells super musty now, almost a dirty, metallic smell. Two other splotchy stains now have a bubbly texture, and look like the texture of a roasted marshmallow.

My landlord has maintenance “fix” the roof but has never addressed the water that got in the attic or our ceiling. I brought up mold concerns today and I haven’t received a response from her yet.

I’ve dealt with two previous mold infestations in prior apartments, one of which was so bad it was making me sick, and I’m terrified of it happening again.

I just want to know how serious this might be, or thoughts of what could be going on. I’m not familiar with renters rights in West Virginia either, so I don’t know where I should begin if my landlord refuses to remediate.

Thank you so much in advance!
