Moving from PMO (IT Consulting) into Financial Services

Breaking In

Hi,

I'm a recent graduate who completed a degree apprenticeship with an IT consultancy. It wasn't quite what I expected, and I ended up in a PMO role, primarily working on financial reporting and reporting-related activities for the last few years of the programme.

At the moment, there aren't many roles within the company that really appeal to me, so my current thinking is to stay in PMO, continue building my knowledge and experience, and aim for a couple of promotions, potentially progressing to a PMO Lead role.

That said, I don't want to spend my entire career in PMO, so I'm continually reviewing my longer-term options. I have a few questions:

  • How feasible would it be to pivot into the financial sector from my current background?
  • Do you think moving into the financial sector would be worthwhile, given my experience and goals?
  • Which career paths would you recommend I explore? I'm open to a range of options, but I'm currently considering roles such as Risk Management or Operations.
  • What resources, qualifications, or experience would you recommend to put me in the strongest position to make that transition?

I'd really appreciate any advice or insights.
