Which handheld should I buy? — [Budget <$1000] — [CFB27, EAFC, Racing / MODDING CAPABILITIES! / Windows]
Thank you so much in advance for your help and I hope I got the formatting correct, apologies if not.
After reading through the FAQ and some of the relevant posts, I have decided to just ask outright given my specific needs. I hear the steam deck does not run windows very well and I will need windows to run EA sports games and mod them, so it seems like that is out. That left me debating between the Asus and the Lenovo handhelds, I think. I’m willing to get a higher-end one if absolutely necessary for my needs, but I would like to keep it as cost-effective as possible. My needs are outlined below and they don’t seem very outlandish, but I am also completely new to PC gaming and have zero point of reference for PC hardware, let alone what hardware I will need to do what I want to do. I would rather defer to those more well-versed in this type of gaming than myself. Thank you so much again, any and all help is very much appreciated!
- Budget: under $1000 but preferably cheaper if possible
- Primary games / platforms: EAFC, CFB 27, clone hero, racing games like Le Mans Ultimate or Asseto Corsa, emulators of various types
- Where I’ll play (home, commute, travel, docked, etc.): I want the portability of the PS Portal that also can dock at home for games like clone hero or racing with a big screen and external controller or wheel/pedals
- Must have / don’t want:
—Must have Windows as a primary OS, the reason I want to get one instead of playing them on PS5 is to be able to mod games like EAFC and CFB 27, so something powerful enough to mod games too
- OS preference (Nintendo / Windows / SteamOS / no preference): Windows
- Comfortable with tinkering? (Yes/No) Yes, kinda. I am a complete newbie to all things PC gaming, the last time I really played on PC was nascar racing 4, and I was maybe 8 playing on my grandpa’s computer. I can normally figure things out with the help of friends, YouTube and Reddit, but the easier the better. I also am not super familiar with windows in general, I use a Mac for my primary needs for work and everyday use.
- Other relevant details (e.g., portability, local co-op, OLED, etc.)
—— I’m not going to play many super powerful games like GTA or Hogwarts Legacy for instance, the fact those are the only two I could think of tells me everything I need to know about the types of games I play, but I do still have the PS5 for games like that if necessary.
—— I want to be able to dock the system and play on a big screen easily and without lag without lag, especially with games like clone hero and racing
—— I want enough space to comfortably store several games, probably 5-10 at any time, and enough ram to comfortably play them with mods
—— I would also like to be able to use it as a portable laptop as well, not as a primary function but doable if necessary should something happen to my MacBook and I need something in a pinch for low end functionality. I don’t expect high end performance of say illustrator or video editing software, but it would helpful to have if so and given how some of these games play, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were possible.
