**The recent fatal shooting of a Houston construction worker by immigration federal agents has brought renewed scrutiny to the federal government’s escalating deportation campaign and the legal system's resistance to it.**

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old business owner who lived in the U.S. for 35 years, was shot and killed by an ICE officer during an early morning traffic stop. According to ICE, Araujo tried to evade arrest and used his vehicle as a weapon.

Araujo’s family disputes this narrative. They state they had an explicit plan to cooperate peacefully if targeted by immigration enforcement. Furthermore, immigration advocates point out a historical pattern of ICE using unmarked vehicles to box in targets without immediately identifying themselves as law enforcement.

The investigation faces immediate transparency concerns:

* **No Video Evidence**: There is no known footage of the actual shooting, only the aftermath.

* **Detained Eyewitnesses**: The three other men in the van—Araujo’s brother and two coworkers—were detained immediately.

* **Pressure to Deport**: The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) reports that ICE is pressuring these three men to sign self-deportation orders, which would remove the only eyewitnesses from the country before an independent investigation can occur.

Local law enforcement agencies, including the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, have been denied access to the evidence and the investigation, which ICE has deferred to the FBI.

While Trump attempts to scale up its enforcement operations, it is hitting a significant wall in the federal court system.

Trump has attempted to use a decades-old immigration law to detain undocumented immigrants indefinitely without bond. However, data compiled by journalists shows that federal judges have rejected this policy 15,000 times through habeas corpus petitions.

Notably, a majority of the Trump-appointed judges who reviewed these cases ruled against Trump. The sheer volume of detainees has overwhelmed the immigration court system, prompting judges across the political spectrum to reject Trump's novel legal interpretations and order the release of detainees.

In response to public backlash over high-profile enforcement incidents, Trump has shifted its public-facing leadership. Figures like Tom Homan and Markwayne Mullin have been brought in to present a more traditional, bureaucratic image.

Despite these changes in personnel, actual enforcement operations have accelerated. Daily detention numbers have doubled in certain regions, with immigration agents arresting as many as 10,000 people a day during specific periods. The ongoing legal battles indicate that while Trump possesses the funding and personnel to execute large-scale sweeps, the judicial system remains a major obstacle to its long-term detention strategy.
