Learn something new today

Discussion

Before I say what I learned today please be nice. There was a time for all of us when we learned something for the first time. So, today I learned how graphics cards are named/graded. When the silicone wafer is produced, it is diced into individual dies, depending on the quality of the die determines the name or series the manufacturer gives it. With Nivdia, as an example makes the 4060, 4070, 4080 and 4090 cards. Dies that are diced from the center of the wafer usually tend to be of better quality. A flagship die (like an RTX 4090) has thousands of stream processors or cores. If a microscopic speck of dust ruins a single cluster of cores on a die, that chip can no longer be a 4090. Instead of throwing it away, manufacturers disable the defective section. If it loses 10% of its cores but the rest work perfectly, it is rebranded and sold as a lower-tier chip, like an RTX 4080 or 4070.
