Al is not inherently a dark-age technology. It could be a repair amplifier—a tool that helps us verify claims, translate lost knowledge, model complex systems.

But the current trajectory is toward a compliance-overfitted Al that tells people what they want to hear, generates convincing falsehoods at scale, and makes the cost of producing misinformation effectively zero.

When any historical image can be faked, any voice cloned, any scientific paper fabricated, the boundary between real and unreal collapses.

This is the ultimate symmetry break that defines a dark age: not that truth vanishes, but that the means of verifying truth degrade beyond functional use. It's not that we stop knowing things. It's that we no longer agree on how to know.
