Small solar and a battery for the bottom of the garden, what is realistic for a greenhouse and a few lights
The greenhouse and the little garden office at the end of the plot have always been a faff to power, running an extension lead down the lawn every time i want a propagator heater on or some lights in the evening. I know there are dedicated off grid solar kits for exactly this, but they tend to be aimed at sheds and allotments, the bits look agricultural and i would rather not have that look at the bottom of a small garden. With the small plug in solar kits now being sold for balconies i started wondering whether one of those, run as a self contained setup down the garden rather than plugged into the house, would be a tidier way to do it, and whether it is realistic for that sort of low draw stuff.
What i am picturing is panels on the greenhouse roof or a south facing fence, feeding a battery that then runs a propagator, a fan, some led grow lights and a string of lights for sitting out on a summer evening. None of that is heavy, it is the kind of trickle load these small systems are actually good at, so on paper it fits. The thing i care about as much as the power is that it does not look like a power station has landed in the borders, so a unit that sits neatly matters to me, the garden is meant to be the nice bit.
The bit i would want advice on is sizing and weather. A greenhouse roof gets brilliant sun but also bakes, and the battery itself wants to be somewhere it is not cooking or soaking, so where do people actually put the storage unit. I was looking at a few brands and the Jackery one appealed because at least in the photos the panels connect straight to the battery so it looks like one tidy object rather than a separate inverter to hide, but any of the plug in storage units would do the same job for loads this small. I am more worried about getting the panel placement right than the brand.
If anyone is already running their greenhouse or a garden room off something like this, what size did you end up needing and did it actually get you through the dimmer months or just the summer. Rather learn from someone else's overspend or undershoot than guess.
